This weekend our campus pastors at the Summit Church took on Psalm 119 as they preached about the importance of the scriptures in our lives. I could not possibly sum up everything they said here so don’t expect that. Here on the blog I want to take a second to share some resources I’ve found particularly helpful as I am growing to love and understand the scriptures more and more. 2 Timothy 3:16-17, words of Paul that have inspired my personal devotion to the scriptures, says

For all scripture is God breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting, and training in righteousness so that the man of God may be equipped for every good work.

If the scriptures are the very inspired breath of God, of course we should immerse ourselves in them! Psalm 119 shows us how much psalmist loves God’s “words” or “laws” which both are referring to the scriptures. I believe our campus pastors really brought that to life and laid out some practical application steps for us. So as you get ready for 2010, we here at the EQUIP blog hope it is a year where you allow the truths of God’s word to begin to change your life. The resources below will hopefully help you there:

  • How to Read the Bible for All Its Worth by Fee and Stuart. This is a great, easy read to help you gain confidence reading the bible. A lot of the pastors here at the Summit would point you towards this work if you asked for help reading your bible.
  • Living by the Book by Howard Hendricks. A little longer than the first one, but an excellent look at the inductive bible study method: observation → interpretation → application.
  • Article: “Studying the Scriptures” (an article by Kenneth Boa): This is a pretty long article but rich with insight into the why and how of studying the bible.
  • Website: www.biblestudytools.com
  • M’Cheyne Daily Bible Reading Plan.  Simply put, a guy named Robert Murray M’Cheyne laid out a great bible reading plan to read it in one year. Check it.

These are just a few of the many good resources out there for you. If you are looking for more,  let us know.

Another great resource out there for tech-savvy people. Crossway has made available 10 different online Bible reading plans, including M’Cheyne, in multiple formats. You can get them delivered by email, to your blog reader, or download them straight into your calendar, for example.
