Pray for Somalia

“Then Jesus declared, ‘I am the bread of life.  He who comes to me will never go hungry, and he who believes in me will never be thirsty.”  -John 6:35

Population:  9,358,602

Capital:  Mogadishu

People:  Northern Somali 74.4%, Southern Somali 20.4%

Per capita GDP:  $282 (<0.5% of USA)

Official Language:  Somali, Arabic

Literacy:  19.2%

Religion:  Muslim 99.7%, Christian 0.3%

Pray:

-Somalian political leaders met this past week to sign an agreement of steps that should be taken in order to hold an election next year.  Somalia has had unstable government for the past 20 years, during decades of war, violence and anarchy.  From 1991 until 2005, Somalia had 14 different governments in 14 years.  Praise God for being One who can bring order to chaos.  Ask God to raise up wise and honest leaders to lead and unit their country.

-Somalia is experiencing the most severe famine they have had in 60 years.  Reports estimate that around 12 million people are in need of food aid.  The U.N. Children’s Funds says that around 1.5 million children are in need of immediate humanitarian assistance in southern Somalia.  Pray that God will bring rain and food to Somalia, where 2/3 of the population are livestock herders.  Ask that Somalians would come to Jesus, who promises that those who come to Him will never go hungry and those who believe in Him will never be thirsty.

-Praise the Lord for the small Somali Church that is growing in faith and vision despite persecution.  Some believers are despised, while others are martyred.  Praise God for our brothers and sisters who know Christ as better than life itself.  Pray that they may be strengthened and unified in the Holy Spirit.
